MOVE over girls, it's the blokes' turn.

Women's weight loss is often in the spotlight but this week it's all about men getting fit.

Men's Health Week kicked off yesterday and Mackay Red E Personal Training is challenging all men to step up to the plate.

Red E Personal Training Mackay manager Selina Wright said Mackay boys should aim to make three small changes to their lifestyle this week.

"It doesn't have to be overly strenuous physical activity, just some form of activity every day can make a big difference to your life," she said.

"You can break it down into two 15-minute blocks, as long as you get your 30 minutes in."

Lou Royal, who is a personal trainer at Red E, said it could be hard for men to make their health a priority.

"Especially in a trade-based town like Mackay," he said.

"People are working these ridiculous long shifts because there is a mentality that the money is so important.

"But nothing is more important than your health."

He said he had learned from personal experience that men often copped flak from their mates when they made healthy choices, especially when it came to their diet.

"You have to take it on the chin," he said.

"It's often the case that the people who are dealing out the punches have a lot of respect for you; they wouldwant to have the guts to sit up and take care of themselves as well."

His main weight loss tip is simple. "Just move more," he said. "That can be through going for a light run or just walking."

Ms Wright said it was time for blokes to "man up" and start talking about their health as well.

"Women love talking, but it is something men are a little more reluctant to do."

This week she is offering Mackay men a free Health and Fitness Consultation at Red E Training.
