The Word means music in Blues
GOSPEL, blues and rock super group The Word is coming to Bluesfest 2016.
The band features John Medeski (Medeski, Martin and Wood), Robert Randolph, Chris Chew, and brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars).
The idea for the supergroup originated nearly a decade and a half ago when the North Mississippi Allstars went on tour with Medeski Martin & Wood.
Speaking from New Orleans, Louisiana, Dickinson (drums and keyboards) said the band couldn't wait to come back to Byron Bay.
"This will be my third trip to Australia, which is such a beautiful part of the world," he said.
"It's like the United States without all the guns.
"When I'm in Byron Bay I love to go out for a run.
"I go for runs at different trails. There's a particular one in Byron Bay that goes along the cliff where the surf breaks, where all the surfers are. The last time we were in Australia, last year, my brother took a day class and surfed there. He loved it."
The Word started making music together in 2000, so the band is looking at releasing a retrospective of their work ahead of their Bluesfest show.
"We'll probably go back, re-master and re-mix some of the older records," Dickinson said.
"We are also going into the studio to work on new music right now, so this new album should come out in the middle of next year.
"We will have some new music to play at Bluesfest next year, with a new style and sound, which we are super excited about."
After their debut album in 2000, The Word reunited in 2005 and 2009 for a number of live performances.
The 2016 announcement of a new album and their appearance at Bluesfest 2016 has got blues fans looking forward to the gig.
