New hoist to help transfer swimmers to the water
SUMMER pool time fun for everyone remains the focus for Mullumbimby's Petria Thomas Pool with the newly purchased transfer hoist.
A transfer hoist now makes it easier for people with a disability to use the existing pool hoist and gain access to the water.
Mobile hoist for disabled swimmers
The transfer hoist is mobile and can also be used for the purpose of changing in the wheelchair accessible change rooms.
The new transfer hoist lifts people out of their chairs and onto the pool hoist which then gently lowers the swimmer into the water.
Previously, disabled pool users were required to bring their own personal transfer hoists, or the transfer was performed by their carers.
Local resident Richard Allen, who was on site to test out the equipment, said it will make coming down to the pool much easier.
"I will certainly be coming more often." he said.
Staff are trained
Pool staff have received training in the operation of the transfer hoist and can assist when requested; no bookings are required.
"It will make my family so much happier now that it is easier for me to go swimming with my daughter." Mr Allen said.
In collaboration with the Access Consultative Working Group, the council identified a need to improve access by increasing the usability of the pool hoist that was purchased and installed at the Mullumbimby Pool last year.
The hoist was purchase at a cost of just over $4,000.
Facilities user friendly for disabled
"It's good to see that the Council are making their facilities user friendly for the disabled," Mr Allen said.
The Mullumbimby Pool now has a pool hoist, a transfer hoist, an MLAK toilet and disabled changing room facilities. It also accepts companion cards.
The National Companion Card Scheme enables eligible people with lifelong disability to participate in activities without incurring the cost of a second ticket for their companion.
The Master Locksmiths Access Key (MLAK) is the standard key system in use for accessible toilets throughout Australia.
