Cops to collect DNA in murder case

FORMER NRL star Craig Field and his co-accused Shaun Fathers will have DNA tests to collect evidence in the alleged king-hit murder at a Kingscliff pub last month.

Police investigating the alleged murder applied to Lismore local court yesterday to take a forensic mouth swab, to obtain DNA evidence from both the accused.

Solicitors for Field and Fathers did not oppose the application and neither accused appeared in court.

Field and Fathers are both facing charges of murder and causing grievous bodily harm with intent over a fight about 9.10pm, on July 15, with Cudgera Creek cattle farmer Kelvin Kane, 50 at the Kings- cliff Beach Hotel.

When police arrived on the night they found Mr Kane unconscious outside the front of the hotel with people performing CPR on him.

He was resuscitated at the scene and rushed to Tweed Heads hospital where he died at 1.15pm the following day.

Field and Fathers were arrested at Kingscliff that day and appeared before Tweed Heads court where they were refused bail.

Field has remained in custody since his arrest but Fathers was granted conditional bail when he appeared at Lismore Local Court on July 24.

Ms Denes ordered the balance of the brief of evidence served by September 18 and adjourned the matter for re- ply at Lismore local court on October 2.

Fathers coached the Grafton Rhinos at the start of the 2011 season.
