More than 1700 properties hit by major power outage
POWER has been restored to more than 1500 homes in the Byron hinterland.
Essential Energy's coastal operations manager, Chris Maccoll, said the outage began about 9am and power was restored to most properties quickly.
"Approximately 1700 Essential Energy customers in Bangalow and surrounding areas were affected by an unplanned power outage just after 9am following network protection equipment operating automatically to isolate the power supply," he said.
"Crews responded immediately, restoring power supply to over 1500 homes and businesses within the hour."
He said 207 customers remain without power and Essential Energy staff are continuing to investigate the issue.
"Estimated times of restoration will be posted on Essential Energy's website once available or customers can call 13 20 80," he said.
"Essential Energy thanks customers for their patience and advises to stay at least eight metres away from fallen or damaged powerlines and call Essential Energy on 13 20 80 to report."
