Man’s hand mauled as he tries to unhook shark
A fisherman has been flown to hospital after being bitten by a shark off the coast of Fraser Island.
An RACQ LifeFlight spokeswoman said it was believed the man, aged in his 50s, had caught a white tip shark.
“The patient told rescuers he was attempting to unhook the animal, from his fishing line, when it attacked his arm,” the spokeswoman said.
“Other people, who were fishing with the man, reportedly helped to free him from the shark’s mouth.”
An RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter was called to the island just before 4pm.
The man was brought to shore by boat.
Paramedics treated him for significant hand injuries before he was flown to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a stable condition.
