Chris Rogers and Shane Watson earn 115 in Boxing Day Test

IT has been an up and down start for Australia on day one of the Boxing Day Test against India at the MCG.

A short time ago the Aussies were 3-118 in the second session.

After losing hard-hitting opener David Warner for a duck with no runs on the board, the hosts fought back courtesy of a 115-run partnership between Chris Rogers and Shane Watson.

Rogers was caught behind off the bowling Mohammed Shami for a typically dogged 57 off 126 deliveries, before pushing at a ball he had previously left so well outside off stump.

Shortly afterwards, India registered a double strike on the same score, with Watson falling lbw to spinner R Ashwin, trying to play a sweep shot across the line.

Watson was under pressure going into this innings, having scored 14, 33, 25 and a duck this series, somewhat alleviating that pressure with a half-century.

But he looked set for a big score and would be disappointed he didn't push on.

A short time ago, Steve Smith (zero) and Shaun Marsh (one) were at the crease.

Queensland debutant Joe Burns was the next man due in.
