Star's Cars - Shannan Ponton from Biggest Loser Families

Vital Statistics

Name: Shannan Ponton

Age: 42

Motto: If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got.

He may be a respected fitness expert and celebrity personal trainer now but Shannan Ponton started his working life as a carpenter.

A passion for the fitness industry soon saw him swap his tool belt for gym equipment as he worked his way from instructor to fitness coach and finally to the role in which we know him best - as a trainer of the Blue Team in Australia's version of The Biggest Loser. The father-of-two also works with elite athletes, professional boxers and international sporting teams.

What was your first car?

1980 Toyota Celica 2.0L Coupe. Driving home from picking the car up, I got a flat tyre. That should have been an omen. I smashed it three times in the first year. As soon as I could afford to get rid of it, it went. Lucky buyer?!

What are you driving now, and what do you love and hate about it?

I've got a BMW X5 3.0 L Diesel. It's a beautiful car to drive and super efficient @ 9.6L/100km... but it's just not the same. Previously, I had an X5 M Sport V8 and I loved it. It drove beautifully and sounded even better. Nothing like the sound of a V8 in the morning. Averaging 22L/100km, those pleasures came at a cost - petrol. I'd say my V8 days are not done, yet.

What car/s did your family have while you were growing up?

Dad is a creature of habit, like most I guess. We had about four models of Mazda 626 2.4L which he upgraded about every three years... And they were always bloody white. He experimented with various after-market add-ons. Different types of sports wheels, none of which really hotted the family wagon up too much but he was happy trying.

What is your greatest frustration on the road?

Texting and driving. It's ridiculously dangerous for everyone.

Do you have any preferred driving music?

I'm a sucker for good Aussie rock. Preferably from the 80s. AC/DC, INXS, Angels, Midnight Oil. Rock on.

If you were to pick anyone in the world to go on a road trip, who would it be and why?

Lance Armstrong. I'm sure we would have to drive the circumference of Australia before I could get to the bottom of his story. Every answer would evolve a new question. It would be a love-hate journey.

What is your dream car and why?

I'm not a massive car head. I've got my Harley Davidson '03 Fat Boy, which I love, so it would have to be something to partner that... A HQ Holden, V8 Monaro, fully worked would do fine.
